If you’re a Titans fan, you probably watch that clip and immediately get steam blowing out your ears like an old Looney Tunes cartoon. If you were on MTV’s Boiling Points, this would be the moment you miss out on winning the $100 cash. And look, I get it. Trust me, I do. But you shouldn’t care, at all. At least not right now.

It’s ironic how there’s literally an iconic Disney movie about football called Remember The Titans, and yet, no one seems to do so. Not even the damn league itself.

But if you’ve been a Titans fan for more than 15 minutes, then you probably know this about our team. We get less love than Meg Griffin. And having worked in national sports talk radio (not to brag), I get it. The Titans don’t really move the needle nationally. It’s still a relatively new fan base in a market that doesn’t even crack the top 20. Sure, Nashville itself has exploded into an “it” city, but the Titans didn’t follow suit (aside from an AFC Championship berth in January 2020). The city blew up when this franchise was at it’s lowest. Just take my word for it. Don’t make me bring back up names like Jake Locker, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, or Bishop Sankey. The timing has just never played into this team’s favor.

Plus, the national media has no idea what the Titans are doing as a franchise, nor do they care to find out. There are 31 other professional teams that (to them) move the needle more (except maybe the Panthers). Mike Vrabel had early success, which national media remembers. They also remember him hoisting Lombardis as a Patriots captain. So they think extremely favorably of him. So many in the national media saw the Titans can Vrabes this past January and think that a franchise that had already traded AJ Brown on Draft night 2022, fired their GM who was responsible for that decision months later, and then can Vrabel this past January. They don’t see the progressive steps taken by a franchise that was heading south quickly. They see dysfunction. And I get it. If I wasn’t inundated with the Titans on a daily basis (like most of America), I wouldn’t get the moves either. Because most people don’t know Mike Vrabel went 6-18 over his final season and a half. Most people don’t remember that a Vrabel-coached team produced one of the most historic collapses in NFL history by blowing a 4-game division lead with 7 games to play by failing to win a single game in that stretch. All the national media (and thus the rest of the nation) remembers is Vrabel out-smarting Belichick on a nationally televised Wild Card game, and then going into Baltimore the very next week and taking down the #1 seed in the AFC, and hoisting Lombardis as a Patriots captain.

TL;DR – The national media doesn’t care enough about the Titans to follow them.

But in the national media’s defense, can you blame them? Again, the Titans have won 6 of their last 24 games, with only one of those games on primetime national TV (not counting their three Thursday night games – the Titans are perpetually the Thursday Night Football house band). What is there to talk about? Derrick Henry? Because now even he’s gone. We all know the NFL is a what have you done for me lately league, and the Titans have done jack. On the flip side, that’s exactly why the Texans have gotten so much hype. And frankly, they should get hype. Hell, I gave an entire take on just that. If you’re an NFL fan, you should be spending this offseason hyping the hell out of the Texans.

The Titans haven’t proven anything. And with an entirely new coaching staff and rebuilt offense, no one is going to go on a limb and pick the Titans. Not in a division with both CJ Stroud and Trevor Lawrence, who have both won a playoff game each since the Titans 6-18 skid started. But even the steam on the Jags has died down tremendously because of the disappointing year they just put together. The national media, especially sports talk radio, is reactionary. It’s not predictive. They get paid for explaining the market, not predicting it. And no one is picking the Titans to do anything based on what we’ve seen recently. If the rest of the country is Logan Roy, they view the Titans as the Connor Roy of the AFC South. And unless they win the presidency, they’re probably not getting the company (or anything) from dad.

The good news for Titans fans: we’re used to this role. Frankly, I LOVE this role. If the Titans end up sucking, so what? Everyone was expecting it anyway. But if they are good? Then the national media gets whiplash when turning their heads to watch the Titans. And we all love seeing other people in neck braces, right?

I know, right? Like what?! Part of me wants to slap this meme on a billboard in the heart of Columbus.

Michigan hasn’t played in a couple weeks and yet they’re still notching W’s. Your response to the team up north ripping off a 15-0 season and a natty is to hire… BILL O’BRIEN?!

Look, Bill O’Brien is a fine person to hire if you’re fine not winning championships.

Look at that stat and try not to let your jaw scrape the floor. The two greatest head coaches of all-time, and he just so happened to be on their staff in the years they DIDN’T hoist trophies. That’s incredible. That’s like sitting in the live studio audience of Big Bang Theory during an episode where they actually said something funny. Like what are the odds?!

But anyone who’s tracked Bill O’Brien’s career, this should come as no surprise.

This is a man who had a 24-point lead on the Kansas City Chiefs just 4 minutes into the second quarter and somehow was trailing at halftime. Oh, and proceeded to give up 41 unanswered points on the way to a 51-31 loss. But hey, it’s not like he was playing in that game. But when the Texans added GM to his office nameplate, he did proceed to trade Deandre Hopkins for a stalk of celery, three paper clips, and a

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a blogger. Not a Buckeye. I’m not a fan of Ohio State. I’m a fan of Content U. So I love the move. Do I think it’s dumb as hell? Of course. But we crave dumb because we are dumb. So hell, bring back Urban Meyer while you’re at it.

On the day before Halloween, the NFL got hit with their worst possible nightmare: Derrick Henry remembering he’s Derrick Henry.

219 yards, 2 touchdowns (aka BONER ALERTS!)

This is literally the last thing the NFL needs right now. Sure, the Bills have a human Juggs machine at quarterback, and the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes (who looks goofy in a helmet). But the Titans have a human the size of a Brinks truck in their backfield. Now look, I’m not saying the Titans are on the level as the Bills and Chiefs. The Titans obviously got trounced by the Bills earlier this year, and they’ve got the Chiefs in Arrowhead this Sunday (and are already 10.5-point underdogs). But they are 5-2, with Derrick Henry coming alive. And it wasn’t just the number of yards the King put up today, it was a lot about how he ran. Every time he touched the ball, it was disappointing if he picked up anything less than 8 yards. In fact, Derrick had more yards per carry (6.8) than rookie Malik Willis had yards per pass attempt (5.5). The dude was running hard and with a purpose. I’m not sure if he was lacking in confidence since his injury last year, but today felt like vintage King. Like hearing Maroon 5 play a song from their Songs About Jane album. Like “yes! this is the King we know and love!”

And on top of it all, Derrick broke the Titans/Oilers franchise record for most touchdowns with 75, surpassing Eddie George – which is fitting for this blog at least, because the first blog I wrote when reviving this site was all about how Derrick Henry is an Eddie George reboot.

And now Derrick sits atop the franchise mountain with the most touchdowns in history. That’s surpassing Eddie George (a career 10,000-yard rusher) and Earl Campbell (a man who nowadays would be convicted of manslaughter just for running over dudes the way he did back in the day).

But the franchise accolades aren’t the only things Derrick accomplished today. He also tied Adrian Peterson (Titans great) and O.J. Simpson (alleged double-murderer) for the most games with 200+ yards rushing with 6. And 4 of those have come against the Houston Texans. Now, you may have thought than Janice McNair and the rest of her family owned Houston’s NFL franchise, but nope. It’s actually the Titans #22. In his last four games against them, he has reeled off 211, 212, 250, and 219 yards consecutively, as well as 9 touchdowns. He averages 7.4 yards per carry. They might as well make their logo his face.

All I’m saying is if you’re a fan of a team not named the Titans, kiss your loved ones, because Derrick Henry hath returned.

If I’m being honest, this year’s coaching carousel is a little bland. There’s not much spice. It has that ‘Fruit Stripes gum after 5 seconds of chewing’ level of flavor. The Broncos hired Nathaniel Hackett, and I almost fell asleep while typing that sentence. The Bears hired former Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus – who personally I like because he was the defensive coordinator when I played football at Mizzou and his defenses would kick the bleep out of me every day in practice on scout team, but I admit, he’s not a sexy, splash hire. But there’s one job that has me incredibly intrigued. A job that was open around this time last year, and hell, will probably be open again this time next year.

I’m of course talking about the London Jaguars of Duuuval County.

There are still a ton of highly qualified and extremely enticing candidates out there. Even after Dan Quinn took his hat out of the ring and admitted he’s staying in Dallas. And I know it was reported that the Jaguars were locked in on Byron Leftwich as their next head coach, but apparently, that whole process hit a snag as there are reports Leftwich wants Baalke fired before he accepts the job. It’s like, get in line, Bry-Bry… amirite?! But you don’t want to fire Baalke, right, Jaguars? That would just be another hire you’d have to deal with. That would mean a lot more paperwork for HR. It would just be a mess. So keep Baalke, and set your sights on one man, and one man only.

The walking chin dimple himself, William James O’Brien.

Why not? Ohh, because he absolutely destroyed and pillaged a perennial contender franchise in the Houston Texans in the span of just a couple of years? Why because he blew a 24-point lead in the playoffs? Because his chin dimple is bigger and deeper than most craters? So what?! He’s a former AFC South head coach, so he knows the division. Yeah, maybe he has a habit of trading off superstar athletes for next to nothing, but you’re the Jaguars! You don’t have any superstar athletes.

All I’m saying is that as a blogger, I’m a fan of Team Content. And Bill O’Brien is the head coach of that team. At least he is now because Urban Meyer was that guy last year. But think about it. You have the ability to hire the only offensive coordinator who couldn’t win a national championship at Alabama! You could hire the guy who traded Deandre Hopkins for a broken David Johnson and a half-drunken Capri-Sun. You could have the guy whose chin dimple is actually the only thing darker than your franchise’s future.

Because if the Jaguars are going to suck (and trust us, they will), we at least want to enjoy it. The last half of your season after firing Urban Meyer wasn’t nearly as fun as the first half (especially for Colts fans). If you’re going to lose, lose in the most entertaining way possible. And the way to do that is with BOB.

So go ahead and hire Bill O’Brien.

Not now, but RIGHT NOW, YOU COWARDS!

Sure, that sounds crazy. But roll with us here.

The post The Titans Losing To The Texans Was A Good Thing (Just Roll With Me Here, Ok??) appeared first on Korked Bats.

The good news about Sunday’s game against the Texans: it couldn’t have gone any worse.

Terrible weather? Check.

Multiple turnovers? Check.

Star player gets injured? Check.

Me watching Requiem For A Dream immediately after the game for some kind of pick-me-up: Check.

And while many people will spend this week telling you why the Tennessee Titans are fake contenders and that Ryan Tannehill has somehow always been bad (despite being one of the NFL’s top-rated passers for the last two years), there is some good to take away from that brutal loss. And it’s not the fact that Ryan Tannehill couldn’t have played a worse game, and yet, they still had a chance to win with less than 4 minutes left. No, rather, it’s the fact that losing that game, when they did, was perfect. That may sound crazy, which is fine because you have to be crazy to be a Titans fan. So I’m staying on brand. But let me explain the reasons why this loss was good.

First off, if your first thought is “SEE! I told you this team is nothing without Derrick Henry!” You’re about three weeks late here, bud. Where were you after the Titans beat two BETTER teams in their previous two games? Lions in the Serengeti don’t sit in the weeds and wait to jump on their prey near as long as you sat waiting to jump on that take. Sure, you can shout that take from the rooftops this week all you want, but you’ll just look like a doofus. Is this team as good without Derrick Henry? Not in the least. But to use that take now is like Skip Bayless waiting to clown LeBron for missing a shot in the NBA Finals to claim he’s the worst. This team is literally the most injured team in NFL history, and yet they’re still the #1 seed in the AFC.

Second, this team needed a “screw your head on straight” game. Does every franchise need one of these? No. But the Titans do. And honestly, I’m ok with it for a couple of reasons. “Screw your head on straight” games benefit teams more than you probably realize. They usually happen late November or early December. I think back a lot to the ’85 Bears – super timely reference, I know – but they had a “screw your head on straight” game against the Dolphins on Monday Night Football late in their season, and many players from that team attribute it to the reason why they won the Super Bowl. Now, am I seriously comparing the 2021 Tennessee Titans to the 15-1, Super Bowl champion 1985 Chicago Bears with a straight face? No. I’m smirking a little bit. But the point remains. Sometimes when a team gets too much hype, they need a game to put their feet back on earth. Plus, if you’re going to lose a bad game, it’s best to do it to a non-contender rather than a team nipping at your heels.

But this also leads me to my third point. Look, the Tennessee Titans aren’t the Kansas City Chiefs. They’re not last year’s Tampa Bay Bucs. They’re not the Green Bay Packers. They are their own beast. They’re gritty. They’re ugly. They rarely win pretty and never win flashy. But they’ll battle you for four quarters. (Have I filled my quota of overly used football cliches for one blog yet?) And they’ll do it mostly when no one thinks they will. The Titans thrive as underdogs. They suuuuuck as favorites. It’s always been this way. Ever since their first year as the Titans.

They underdog’d their way to a playoff berth. They underdog’d their way past the Bills, past the Indianapolis Colts, and ultimately past the AFC Central (remember the Central?!) champion Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, obviously, they met their underdog match in the Super Bowl with ultimate underdog Kurt Warner. But that’s why it came down to the final play and finished with only one-yard difference. It was the underdog of undog matchups. Kurt Warner just slightly underdog’d harder than the Titans. But the Titans continued to underdog since then. (Minus that near-decade of misery in the 2010’s) But for real think about it:

Mariota’s touchdown pass to himself in the playoffs: underdogs

Tennessee putting the nail in the Patriots dynasty coffin: underdogs

Derrick Henry double-tapping Earl Thomas in the back: underdogs

2003 Wild Card game in Baltimore: underdogs

2018 season until Taylor Lewan demanded national respect after beating the Eagles: underdogs

What about the entire 2009 season? You guessed it…

Underdog GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

Underdog is engrained in this franchise’s DNA. They play better as dogs. Always have, always will. (I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d be ok if they wanted to dominate every now and then – but for now, them’s the rules.) So losing to the Texans in Week 11 was perfect. It will get many to doubt this team, much as they did throughout the 6-game win streak. And then they’ll play with a chip on their shoulder, unlike they did on Sunday.

Now that leads us to Sunday. The Titans are coming in as 5.5 point dogs. Remember the last time the Titans went to Gillette as big underdogs? I do.

Now obviously the Titans won’t have their human yeti in the backfield, but they will be carrying the weight of a chip the size of him on their shoulder. So if every former pro sitting at the network TV pregame show desks pick the Patriots in between laughing way too loud and too much, then good… good… let the hate flow through them.

Personally, I prefer the Titans to be doubted. Because it makes it that much funnier and more enjoyable when they rip off the W.

Sunday Night Football Picks for Titans vs. Rams - NBC Analysts All Go Rams Except for One
Let the record state that Mike Tirico only chose the Titans because he didn’t want the entire screen be a Rams logo, so he took them as a joke.

Is this blog written based on any analytics or metrics? Hell no. Is it based on merely anything other than my hope for this team? Not really, no. Am I grasping at straws looking for anything hopeful to cling onto after my team lost to the 1-8 Texans? Probably. But you’d be hard-pressed to pick out anything that I’ve written in this blog to be wrong. The Titans thrive as underdogs. And they have the rest of the league right where they want them.

Chess, not checkers.

P.S. They’re still the Tickle Monsters

Rex Burkhead? I legit thought Rex Burkhead has been out of the league for like three or four years now? Maybe I feel that way because, to me, Rex Burkhead is the Toby Gerhart of Danny Woodhead’s. Hell, he’s so old, I call him T-Rex Burkhead! #sickburn Ok, he’s only 30. But in running back years, that’s 82. He might as well be a jogging back at this point, because pretty soon, my man’s gonna be hitting holes using a walker. But that’s enough about Rex and his old balls. This is less about him and more about the Texans. They’ve become your friend who dated one older woman and now they only have an appetite for grandmas. They’re the Paul Finch of the NFL.

It used to be whenever the Texans made a dumb personnel decision, we could just chalk this up as a dumb franchise decision made by that walking chin dimple Bill O’Brien. In fact, this whole old running back addiction all started last year when the Texans traded the best wideout in the sport for a guy who had one good season… in 2016…. in David Johnson. Sure, we had our laughs. It was funny. But now it’s getting serious. BOB’s been gone for months now and they’re still making head-scratching roster moves. There’s no excuse for this anymore. They have a legit problem. Check out their current running back roster:

  • David Johnson
  • Mark Ingram
  • Philip Lindsay
  • Rex Burkhead
  • Dontrell Hilliard

I know Philip Lindsay and Dontrell Hillard are fairly young, but Philip Lindsay was a hot rookie years ago and Dontrell Hillard’s name alone makes him sound like he’s 63-years-old. But as for the other guys, Mark Ingram is this generation’s Frank Gore, and as noted above, David Johnson was a one-hit-wonder over half a decade ago. I know this because I owned him in fantasy in 2017… the year after his good year. At this rate, who’s next to sign with the Texans? Peyton Hillis? They gonna take a run a Shaun Alexander? Maybe kick the tires on Rashard Mendenhall? How long before the Texans give Ahman Green a call? All I’m saying is the Texans need to have a talking to. As a Titans fan, trust me, I think it’s hilarious, but at some point, they’re going to get some geriatric running back killed by wheeling him out against an AFC South defense.

And look, I’m not coy to the fact that it’s gotta be difficult to be in the same division as Derrick Henry. And we’re not just saying that because this is The #1 Derrick Henry Fan Site On The Internet™, but because it’s true. But Texans, repeat after me… anything Bill O’Brien WOULD do, don’t do. WWBOBD? Don’t.

Anyway, let’s laugh at the Texans.

But who the hell rides on Peloton as JJ Watt? If you’re going to make a fake Peloton account, why wouldn’t you choose someone like Bill Murray or something? That way you don’t have to live up to absurd expectations for fitness output. JJ Watt might be the HARDEST person to pretend to be on a fitness app.

The post 5 Questions To Ask When Considering JJ Watt Potentially Landing With The Titans appeared first on Korked Bats.

]]>
An official artist’s rendering of what JJ Watt would look like in a Titans uniform.

J.J. Watt became a free agent this morning. If you’re a Titans fan (or any NFL fan) you probably instantly thought of what it would look like to add this personified Mr. Incredible onto your team’s lineup. This blog is to take a deeper look into that hypothetical. Is it worth it for the Titans to add J.J. Watt to their team?

In a word: yes.

In two words: hell yes.

I mean, did you SEE the Titans pass rush last year?

However, if we’re being responsible adults (which admittedly, I rarely am – I forgot to wheel the trash can down my driveway on trash day this week), we need to dig a little deeper into this discussion.

The fact that J.J. Watt is being released, rather than traded, makes a move to the Titans very possible. But there are so many other questions to be asked. Five, in fact. And we’re here to ask – and answer – those questions.

1. Would he even want to come to the Titans?

This is arguably the most important question. Would J.J. Watt want to come to Nashville? If he was a bachelorette, that’d be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, he’s not.

You know he wants to go to a contender. And if the Titans can bolster their defense to be even half as good as their third-ranked offense, they without question will be. And a guy like J.J. Watt will only help get them there.

Plus, he would be reunited with his former defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel. And if you throw the right jacket on him, he looks like just a country singer, which is always a plus in Nashville.

And of course, he’s clearly an Earl Campbell fan. And who did Earl Campbell play for? Hint: The Tennessee Titans franchise (kinda).

However, there are some downfalls. The Titans don’t employ both of his brothers like the Steelers do, and they don’t play in Wisconsin as the Packers do. Plus, he may just want to get out of the AFC South altogether. We don’t know.

But counterpoint:

Everyone loves a good party.

2. Can the Titans even afford him?

This is the boring part of the hypothetical. It’ll be tough, but the Titans have the flexibility. Unlike other suitors.

Remember last year when we didn’t know if the Titans would be able to afford both Tannehill and Derrick Henry with new deals? But Jon Robinson got creative and found a way to make it work. Never underestimate Jon Robinson. (Except for last offseason… *sigh*)

So don’t think he couldn’t rearrange some salaries to bring in JJ Watt.

Plus, like I said, they’re sitting prettier than other suitors. Check what Mike Herndon wrote at Broadway Sports:

Pittsburgh is currently $30 million over a projected $180.5 million salary cap according to OverTheCap.com, and while the retirement of Maurkice Pouncey will free up close to $15 million in space, the Steelers will still have to get creative to free up enough room to fit a reasonable salary for Watt.

They certainly could make it happen, especially if Watt was willing to take a discount to play there (which he might be). Ben Roethlisberger’s $41.3 million cap hit can be massaged with a restructure and the team could release veteran cornerback Joe Haden to clear another $8.5 million. However, they will also need to replace Pouncey and reinforce an offensive line that has wilted over the last couple seasons as well as trying to find space to pay JuJu Smith-Schuster.

And what about the Packers?

The Packers have a similar cap situation to Pittsburgh though. Currently over the projected cap by about $28 million, Green Bay will need to do some serious cap gymnastics just to get in compliance. Like other teams, they can restructure some big deals and possibly look at releasing a guy like Preston Smith to get there, but there are fewer “easy” moves for Green Bay to make without creating major roster holes. Would Watt take a discount here? Maybe, but it might have to be pretty steep.

Again, money is tight in Nashville. But it’s tight everywhere. Maybe they can pay him in dogecoin?

3. Do the Titans even want him?

You might think this is a dumb question to ask, but does J.J. Watt even have enough left in the tank to take a stab at? Can he stay healthy enough to stay on the field?

Titans fans know all about signing edge rushers who wear #99 who can’t stay healthy enough to make an impact. *cough Jadeveon Clowney cough*

The faces of all Titans fans when thinking of Clowney’s time in two-toned blue.

J.J. Watt only played in eight games in 2019 and only racked up five sacks in sixteen games in 2020. The Titans need free-agent signings that they know for sure will make impacts right away. They can’t afford to make another Vic Beasley or Clowney mistake.

But then there’s this counterpoint:

4. Is there enough creatine in the greater Nashville area to support JJ Watt’s lifestyle?

It may seem silly, but this is a legit question you need to ask. Much like if you were trading for James Harden (again, sorry Houston), you need to make sure there are enough strip clubs (and now fast-food restaurants apparently) in a ten-mile radius of your team.

With my top-level research, I found there are only 3 GNC stores in the greater-Nashville area. That’s gotta be a concern for the sustainability to even land J.J. Watt.

That’s rough. And not a good outlook for Nashville. Plus,

5. What happens to his hit TV show ULTIMATE TAG on FOX?

This is arguably the most pressing question of the entire J.J. Watt leaving Houston saga. His hit TV show ULTIMATE TAG on FOX is now in flux. It currently has yet to be renewed for a second season, and this news could make or break that decision. If he’s reunited with his brothers in Pittsburgh, maybe that will help the chances of the show being renewed, but otherwise, moving to a new city may have J.J. realign his priorities and I can’t imagine a reality TV show about people playing tag is high on that list. It’s a shame, I know. But the tens of us who watched it will just need to band together for support.

In summation, will JJ Watt end up on the Titans? I have my doubts. If I had to put a percentage on it, I’d say 22%. Just because that’s Derrick Henry’s number and this is The #1 Derrick Henry Fan Site On The Internet™.

Think back to when you were a kid, waking up on Christmas morning. Not a clue as to what you could be receiving that day. The world was your oyster in terms of Christmas gifts. There could literally be anything in those boxes! An X-Box. A pony. Another slightly smaller box. Literally anything!

But for this poor kid, it was an autograph by fired head coach and GM Bill O’Brien. ربح المال من الانترنت

I imagine opening a gift like this gives you all the enthusiasm and sheer joy of receiving a ply of toilet paper for Christmas, especially considering both now serve the same purpose. [insert Price Is Right fail horn] That kid probably would’ve preferred coal in his stocking rather than the John Hancock of the architect of one of the worst trades in NFL history. Just brutal.

Credit the kid, however, because I believe that’s the proper reaction to receiving a gift like this. Walk it straight to the trash can. 888 Open said trash can. And place it in there. Making it the second time this season, BOB has been taken out with the trash. Plus, who would want to hang a photo of that dude’s chin dimple in their room? افضل مواقع المراهنات Might as well just post a picture of a pig’s anus. Pretty much the same thing.
