Random Athlete Of The Month – May 2010

It’s that time of month… No, not that time to avoid your girlfriend. It’s that time of month to announce this month’s Korked Bats Random Athlete of the Month. Now, we know what you are thinking, “What?! There hasn’t been a Random Athlete of the Month on this site for months!” And you would be right, but that doesn’t mean we’re done.

We at Korked Bats want to pay homage to those athletes that had their relevancy at some point or another. You know, those athletes that when you hear their name, you say, “Ohhh man! I remember them!” (And for you not as diligent sports fans, you quickly hop on the intra-webs and Google them)

Anyway, without further adieu, we bring you the Korked Bats Random Athlete of the Month for May 2010:

Dante Bichette

Colorado Rockies – Left Fielder/Right Fielder

When it comes to random baseball players from the 90s, Dante Bichette has got to be at the top of everybody’s list along with Brady Anderson, Rob Nen, Edgar Martinez, Ken Caminiti, and Raul Mondesi.

Dante, not to be mistaken with the Peak, came into the Major Leagues in 1988 with the California Angels (who later became the Anaheim Angels, who then later became the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, which makes total sense if you think about it). After struggling to put up good enough stats, Dante was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1991. Unfortunately for Bichette, it was the same story in a different place. The Brewers ended up trading him to the new expansion team, the Colorado Rockies in 1993.

After two solid seasons in Colorado, Dante was able to produce his best season in 1995, the first season for Coors Field. Dante batted .340 with 40 home runs and 128 RBIs, coming very close to winning the Triple Crown. Which, for those of you that don’t know what the Triple Crown is, it’s when a horse wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. However, in baseball, the Triple Crown is when a player leads the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs.

Dante Bichette was very well known for being one of the “Blake Street Bombers” along with Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga, and Vinny Castilla. Which is cute, since none of these guys were good enough to play for the Bronx Bombers.

So Dante Bichette, congratulations on being random enough to be named this month’s Korked Bats Random Athlete of the Month. It’s great to finally have a professional baseball player who not only looks like Shrek, but has this song as his plate appearance music be our Random Athlete of the Month.
