The Yankees lost their 14th game out of the last 18 last night, losing to the Red Sox in 10 innings, 5-3, but somehow they still brought home a dub. One of the greatest MLB franchises ever just dropped a bobblehead honoring one of the greatest sitcoms ever, by honoring one of their greatest employees. Not Jeter. Not Gehrig. Not even George Herman Ruth, or George Steinbrenner, but rather a different George. Last night, they dropped a bobblehead in honor of their former assistant to the traveling secretary, George Costanza… and yada, yada, yada, it’s real, and it’s spectacular. It’s about time the Yankees partnered with Vandalay Industries. Seinfeld remains an iconic classic sitcom. And I know the older I get and the longer I hold on to this take, the more and more I sound like my parents honking Three’s Company or my grandparents attesting that The Andy Griffith Show is still the greatest sitcom of all time. But I feel like I still have a few more years to stand by this take before my millennial ass enters boomer territory. Seinfeld is on Netflix right now, so go start it. The first season or two might be a chore to get through, like most shows, but once it gets into a grove, it doesn’t look back for nine seasons – which is almost half as many seasons as it’s been since the Yankees won a World Series.

Look, it’s not often I’ll give the Evil Empire their props, but here I have to tip my cap like that little kid at Jeter’s last game. Here’s hoping Yankee Stadium went full Seinfeld and stocked the concession stands with pretzels that make people thirsty.

P.S. Larry David’s story of firing George Steinbrenner is an all-time story.

You might wanna sit down for this, but Jeopardy! contestants still don’t know anything about sports.

Not the worst guess in the world. Cubs were coined the loveable losers. The Phillies were just losers. I’ll give these dweebs that one.

Transfer portal, you morons! Again, kinda hard for someone who hasn’t taken their noses out of 1600’s French Literature in the last five years as the portal is a fairly new concept in college athletics. But that’s not all!

Durant?! That’s all you got? Woof. That’s brutal. And maybe slightly racist? People are asking. But damn. These folks are stupid! Now look, was this blog solely written to make fun of NERDS! Who’s to say really? But yes. Yes, it was. “Austin, it’s 2024. Bullying isn’t cool anymore.” And to that sentiment, I’d agree with, bully sucks. However, pretentiousness still is prevalent. Mostly among people with high IQ’s, who read more than three books a decade, and contestants on Jeopardy! You know every contestant on that show looks down at someone who doesn’t know the difference between mid-1700 renaissance painters or who assassinated Dr. Humphrey Boyle in Sweden in 1872. So, if I – as one of those people who doesn’t know the answers to those made-up questions I just came up with – have a chance to get one over on these geniuses, you bet your ass I’m gonna take it. So suck it, nerds! Read a book, once in a while. And by book, I mean sports almanac, you doofuses!

The 2023 Tommy Awards: Your Winners https://korkedbats.com/the-2023-tommy-awards-your-winners/ Wed, 10 Jan 2024 01:54:36 +0000 https://korkedbats.com/?p=33281 The post The 2023 Tommy Awards: Your Winners appeared first on Korked Bats.

Every vote has been counted, and It’s time to announce our winners! Special thanks to everyone who voted! This is truly our favorite time of the year, and having you all along for the ride makes it that much more special.

Enough mushy stuff. Let get to the fun part. Your winners of the 2023 Tommy Awards are:

The 2023 Tommy Legacy Award

If you’re confused as to why a film in 2018 just won an award for 2023, you’re certainly not alone. Every year, our dearest CineBoi Tom (who these awards are named for) chooses a film or TV show from the past that he finally got around to in 2023 and loved. Tom loves to take his time, but his winners are never wrong.

Congratulations to Alex Garland, Natalie Portman and the rest of the cast & crew of ‘Annihilation’.

Best Actress of 2023

Fresh off her Golden Globe win Sunday night, Ayo Edebiri is our winner for actress of the year. Is a Tommy more prestigious than a Golden Globe? Probably not but at least you don’t have to sit through a Jo Koy monologue…shots fired. Edebiri was EVERYWHERE this year, but truly what put her over the top was her supporting performance in ‘The Bear’

This is Ayo Edebiri’s first nomination and first win.

Best Actor of 2023

Another Golden Globe winner from Sunday walks away with his first Tommy Awards as well. He’s patiently waited through 20 years of supporting roles in Christopher Nolan films to finally get the lead and he absolutely crushed it. Perhaps the single best performance by any actor for 2023. I think he can confidently look forward to bringing home the Oscar come March.

This is Cillian Murphy’s first nomination and first win.

Best TV Show of 2023

Honestly, we thought ‘Succession’ in it’s last year was going to take the cake, but ‘The Bear’ snuck in from behind and took the Tommy. It might even be good enough to fill the ‘Succession’ sized hole in my heart. I guess this makes up for us not including in the vote for last year’s Tommy’s.

Congrats to the cast & crew!

Best Movie of 2023

Are you really that surprised? Yah, ‘Barbie’ got a lot of the vote this year, but let’s face it, Christopher Nolan is among everyone’s favorite directors and this is his magnum opus. It’s truly deserving of this prestigious award.

SKIIIIIP!!!

And this all comes a week after Stephen A. had to bust out the nametag for his new employee.

Look, I get it. I call my cohost by my wife’s name all the time and vice versa. It’s awkward and difficult to overcome. Imagine if Shania did this in his last gig. Like if he referred to Trent Dilfer as John Elway. That would just be awkward for everyone. And insulting to Elway. Maybe they need to bust out a swear jar at the Worldwide Leader. Best way to drive a point home is through their wallet. So listen, Shane. Take it from me. Start charging yourself a dollar every time you say “Skip.” Consider it an FCC violation. Even if it’s said in passing, like “I skipped breakfast this morning.” That way, Shawn, you eliminate that word/name out of your entire vocabulary. Trust me, Shakira. It’s the method that works best. When I first started on the air here in Chicago, I had a plethora of verbal ticks that I had to overcome, so we set up a jar. And once you have to start paying up, that’s when you really put thought into it, and before you know it, it’s muscle memory. It works, undisputed.

I also find it funny how Sharon dropped the ball in a segment where they were discussing Kadarius Toney. SKIIIIIIIIIIP!!!

The Cubs Were Just Waiting For ‘Succession’ To End Before Turning It On This Summer https://korkedbats.com/the-cubs-were-just-waiting-for-succession-to-end-before-turning-it-on-this-summer/ Tue, 30 May 2023 23:13:23 +0000 https://korkedbats.com/?p=32709 The post The Cubs Were Just Waiting For ‘Succession’ To End Before Turning It On This Summer appeared first on Korked Bats.

Never in my life have I ever related to a pro-baseball team more than the Chicago Cubs this season. Over the weekend, leading up to the series finale of one of TV’s greatest shows (don’t @ me) Succession, the Cubs were swept by the previously last-place Cincinnati Reds. The sweep ultimately sent the Cubs to the cellar of the NL Central. But then Succession aired, and the Cubs trotted out on Memorial Day against the best team in the majors, the Tampa Bay Rays, and shut them out.

Was it the greatest win in the history of regular season baseball? People are asking.

The Rays came in fresh off a weekend series win over the NL’s best team, Los Angeles Dodgers, and having just hit their 100th and 101st home run of the season. The next best team in baseball has 90. And the Cubs proceeded to blank the hell out of them like **MAJOR SPOILER** Shiv did to “THE ELDEST BOY” Kendall.

Now sure, the Cubs only won 1-0, but it was as dominant of a 1-0 game you’d ever see. Some are saying the greatest 1-0 game in the history of baseball. Trust me, I was there. Were you? Didn’t think so. So you have to take my word for it.

Now these recent developments make me wonder: were the Cubs distracted by the final season of Succession? Personally, I and many other people were. So it’s easy to believe the Cubs were as well. Frankly, I was extremely productive on Monday as well. Having walked over 22,000 steps (not to brag) and doing a load of laundry. Well, at least putting it in the wash. I still need to move it to the dryer. But it’s all been since Succession ended. Coincidence? There are no coincidences.

Now you’re probably thinking: “It’s one game. So what?” First off, you can’t put together a winning streak without wining the first one. And that’s exactly what the Cubs did. Against MLB’s best team. Look, Succession is over, which means we’re looking for the next great show on TV. Will it be the Cubs? People are asking.

South Park Accurately Predicted The Future Of The NFL https://korkedbats.com/south-park-accurately-predicted-the-future-of-the-nfl/ Tue, 11 Oct 2022 01:57:48 +0000 https://korkedbats.com/?p=31367 The post South Park Accurately Predicted The Future Of The NFL appeared first on Korked Bats.

Sarcastaball South Park

I know “Simpsons did it” is a well known thing, but the turn tables have turned. The animated show has time and time again predicted funny moments that later became true, from Lady Gaga performing at the Super Bowl to Murder Hornets, the show has an impressive history of jokes becoming true. It goes to beg the question does life imitate art or does art imitate life? This time, it’s South Park accurately predicting the future.

It’s been 10 years since the Comedy Central show aired its episode “Sarcastaball” in the 16th season of the show. In the episode, Randy gets tired of all the ridiculous rules the NFL has implemented to make the game safer and decides to make his own version of the game full of hugs and kisses to poke fun at how soft the game has become. Players get points for compliments, turning the ball over is a good thing, and nobody gets hurt. Of course, it’s meant to be sarcastic, but it ends up taking off.

Now, here we are watching as the game we love becomes Sarcastaball. The roughing the passer penalty called on the Atlanta Falcons on Tom Brady was ridiculous and had the internet and talking heads going crazy. Then, during Sunday night football it gets even worse. Chris Jones was called for literally tackling Derek Carr. In fact, it looks like Jones even possessed the ball, himself. It should have been Chiefs ball, not even just a sack. Instead, it was called roughing the passer and the Raiders extended the drive, later resulting in a field goal.

I don’t get it. It doesn’t make sense. In what world is this roughing the passer? What is the defender supposed to do? Wish the QB luck on his drive? This is not a penalty.

All of this does come on the heels of the Tua injury a few weeks ago. You have to imagine somehow that is somehow playing into things here. I understand looking out for the QB but this is taking things too far. You have to be able to tackle the player with the ball. I’m scared we’re a few weeks away from seeing the players with little flags wrapped around their waists, and tackling is a thing of the past. Or, maybe Sarcastaball will become a real thing? Spare me on Butters’ Creamy Goo. Gatorade will be just fine for me.

Don’t remember the episode? Here’s what you missed.

Every NFL Team As A TV Show https://korkedbats.com/every-nfl-team-as-a-tv-show/ Sun, 11 Sep 2022 16:00:18 +0000 https://korkedbats.com/?p=31152 The post Every NFL Team As A TV Show appeared first on Korked Bats.

]]>
America’s favorite TV show is back! Of course, I’m talking about NFL football. However, this got me thinking…if all the teams in the NFL were hit television shows…what would they be? So, I stopped thinking about it and took action. Every team in the league and a TV show that is goes hand in hand with. How did I choose? It could have something to do with the teams identity, their geography, narrative, or just randomness that I see fit.

Arizona Cardinals – Two and a Half Men

Two and a Half Men was a great TV show. Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer had great chemistry. Then, behind the scenes, Charlie became difficult to work with. He had demands and management put up with it for a long time, but eventually enough was enough and they had to kill him off and replace him with America’s sweetheart, Ashton Kutcher.

The same thing could end up happening in Arizona with Kyler Murray. The offseason was full of complaints and demands. Now, Arizona gave in. They caved and gave him what he wanted. What’s next? How long will they keep doing it before replacing him with a new younger star because it all got too toxic?

Atlanta Falcons – Atlanta

Uh…I’m not sure about the Atlanta Falcons this year. It’s not going to be pretty. They play in Atlanta, so their TV show is Atlanta. I didn’t want to spend too much effort on the Falcons, sorry.

Baltimore Ravens – The Wire

Hey, this is fitting because The Wire took place in Baltimore! That’s not the only similarity, however. The Ravens are walking on a Wire with this Lamar Jackson situation. In fact, Lamar is also walking on a wire. If either side slips it could cost them millions. On the show The Wire, people were always in danger. Just as they are now in Baltimore. Just like the show, it’s going to be a great watch.

Buffalo Bills – Game Of Thrones

Everyone loved Game Of Thrones. It was everyone’s favorite. Until it came to a very disappointing end. I expect to see a similar situation with the Bills this season.

Carolina Panthers – The Punisher

Baker Mayfield is out for revenge. This season he is going to try to fight anyone who gets in his way. That starts with his former team in Week One. To be honest, I never watched the show The Punisher, but I watched the movie way back when. It has to be the same thing. Dude’s family gets brutally murdered, and he then sets out for his revenge. Exactly what Baker will be looking to do. The Browns really dragged his name through the mud. The said they needed an adult in the room and then went and gave Deshaun Watson a record breaking contract. Yes, that Deshaun Watson. I can’t blame Baker for being fired up. Things are going to get interesting.

Chicago Bears – Young Sheldon

Fans of Young Sheldon say great things about it. They rave about how good it is and how talented its young star is. However, despite all that hype I’m not buying it nor do I want to sit down and watch it. Just like the Bears this season. Justin Fields is okay. He’s not Aaron Rodgers.

Cincinnati Bengals – Squid Game

Squid Game surprised us all last year when it became a world wide hit. Just as the Bengals surprised everyone by making it to the Super Bowl. Who saw that coming? However, last year is last year. When’s the last time you heard someone talk about Squid Game? This year will not be last year for Cincinnati.

Cleveland Browns – Pitbulls and Parolees

Yeah…you get it.

Dallas Cowboys – Yellowstone

Cowboys make me think of Yellowstone. That’s just a gimme. Beyond that, the Cowboys are carried by their star in Dak just as the show is carried by its star Kevin Costner. Just like Yellowstone, the Cowboys need more running time. Meaning they need to run the ball effectively. Pollard needs to step up if Zeke isn’t going to return to the form he once was. That’s going to be key for Dallas this year. Yellowstone the TV show needs more running time because it’s so entertaining. It really is.

Denver Broncos – Fuller House

Full House was one of the most popular show ever. Loved by all, hated by few. The Denver Broncos have a storied history, as well. As does Russell Wilson. All are longing for what once was, but instead we’re left with something disappointing and cheesy.

Detroit Lions – Hard Knocks

The Detroit Lions were just on HBO’s Hard Knocks. This is an obvious and correct pick. To be fair, they were a great team for it. You have a Coach in Dan Campbell who loves saying ridiculous things in front of a camera, a team that isn’t worried about the distraction of cameras because they’re not going anywhere, HBO should document the Lions every year.

Green Bay Packers – Any Late Show

The Packers are any late night show. You take away the lead, you’re left with nothing. Take Rodgers away from Green Bay and you are left with what could be the worst team in the league.

Houston Texans – She-Hulk: Attorney At Law

Why? Just why is this a thing? Don’t make me watch, please!

Indianapolis Colts – 60 Minutes

Boring, but successful. It wins. The Colts are 60 Minutes.

Jacksonville Jaguars – The Office

When I want to relax and watch some TV, The Office is always my first pick. Just like the Jacksonville Jaguars always have the first pick in the NFL draft. Could they end up with it three years in a row? It’s totally possible. Yikes. Two funny things to watch: The Office and Jags games.

Kansas City Chiefs – Ted Lasso

Two very successful nouns with hardware to prove it. Kansas City won a Super Bowl recently. Patrick Mahomes won an MVP. Ted Lasso won Emmys. Its stars won Emmys. Success isn’t the only thing uniting these two, though. Both of the leads here, Mahomes and Sudeikis, have family that America simply cannot stand. Patrick has his brother Jackson and his wife, and Jason has his ex, Olivia Wilde. I’m not sure which one of these people the internet hates more.

Las Vegas Raiders – Friends

Derek Carr and Davonte Adams are best friends. They may not win a championship, but it’s always fun playing with your Friends. Reading the stories about their bond has made me like them both more than I previously did. They played together in college at Fresno State now get to again in the NFL.

Los Angeles Chargers – Keeping Up With The Kardashians

They’re pretty, gotta give them that. But…is there any substance? Or are we just letting our eyes deceive us? I’m not sure but I can’t stop watching or take my eyes off. I can’t explain it. I shouldn’t like it. It’s not the style of game I like. Yet, week after week, year after year here I am.

Los Angeles Rams – The Crown

Last year, The Crown won a lot of awards and Emmys. Last year, the Rams won the Super Bowl. This year, won’t be as big for either. They aren’t winning. But we’ll always have last season. The past week has not been kind to the Rams nor the Royals. Not sure which one had a harder week if we’re being honest…

Miami Dolphins – Only Murders In The Building

So much talent on one team and on one show. Only Murders in The Building stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The Dolphins have plenty of stars of their own. Just like the show, however, what the Dolphins have to look out for is in their own building. Is it the QB? Spoiler: Yes.

Minnesota Vikings – The Twilight Zone

Every week you get something totally different. You never know what to expect. I swear they are the hardest team to bet against or bet on. At least it’s entertaining. Most of the time.

New England Patriots – Jeopardy!

Once the legend left, things haven’t been nearly as good.

New Orleans Saints – Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives

New Orleans has the best food in the country. Hands down. Triple D is the best food show in the country. Both also feature a lead who likes to say goofy things when the camera in rolling.

New York Giants – Love Is Blind

The hit Netflix show seeks to answer the question “Is love really blind?” According to the Giants, it must be because why is Daniel Jones still starting for this team? I don’t understand the love and devotion after what we’ve seen with out eyes the past few years.

New York Jets – Dr. Pimple Popper

Make it stop! Look away!

Philadelphia Eagles – It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is sarcasm. You know that if you watch the show. Or this team. It’s gonna get ugly. These Birds Of War are not going to make it outside of Philly. Just like Charlie.

Pittsburgh Steelers – Succession

Replacing future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger will not be easy. First up is Mitchell Trubisky. Who knows how long that will last before it’s onto the next one, then the next. Who will really be replacing him in the end? Doubt it will be Trubisky.

San Francisco 49ers – House Of The Dragon

Game of Thrones was a huge hit. How are we going to feel about the new prequel? It’s different but the same. Just like Jimmy G has moved on and the team is the same, but different with Trey Lance now under center. How good will he be? We don’t know. Will it be as good? It should be. All signs point to yes on that one so far, but stand by because the last one didn’t end too pretty.

Seattle Seahawks – 90 Day Fiancé

The love affair between Seattle and Geno Smith isn’t going to last. This marriage is a sham. I don’t want to say they are tanking on purpose…but what are they thinking over there?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – College GameDay

Why is this poor old man still doing this? Somebody please make him stop this is getting embarrassing. He’s going to get hurt out there. It’s not going to end well. It’s cringey to watch. Tom Brady is getting old, too.

Tennessee Titans – Perry Mason

All you Perry Mason fans know Perry Mason basically never lost. I have to imagine knowing that made watching the show pretty predictable. Still entertaining, though. But predictable. Just like when you play the Titans. They are going to feed Henry the ball. Stop him. You know what they’re going to do, but you still cannot stop them. It’s still entertaining. I’m sure there’s a more relevant answer here than Perry Mason. However, Korked Bats does surprisingly great with the over 70 demographic. Have to keep our audience fed.

Washington Commanders – American Horror Story

Carson Wentz under center in our nation’s capital. A city that is used to incapable leaders, maybe they can make it work there. I don’t think so. This thing is going to be frightening. That’s just what’s going to happen on the field. What’s going on off the field and behind the scenes? A true horror.

What changes would you have made? Where did I go wrong? Send me a Tweet.
