Why You Should Watch: The World Series

There is an ever-decreasing list of things that make baseball better than the other major sports (football, basketball, and Quidditch).  In an attempt to stir some enthusiasm for the World Series. (which happens to feature my team, the St. Louis Cardinals, and yes, by “my team,” I literally mean I purchased the team… on eBay… got a deal. You know you can find some really great stuff on eBay. I was skeptical at first too, but now, I… I should get back to what I was saying.) I’m going to list some of the reasons you should be excited about Major League Baseball.  I’m doing this a) because I only know how to write in list-form and b) I’m scared that an episode of Parks and Rec will get better ratings than the Fall Classic. Thus not be able to prove it to my friends in case the Cardinals actually win the World Series. So here we go.

Why You Should Watch:

The World Series

1.  Playoff Beards

While these aren’t specific to baseball (see: hockey playoffs beards), they are certainly worth noting. In fact, Brian Wilson’s beard made the jump from a playoff beard to an everyday beard to a Taco Bell commercial. Below are some of the more popular and/or recent playoff beards that have graced the national spotlight. And although she doesn’t play baseball, I think I saw Rosie O’Donnell get into the action of growing a beard.

Heck, they’re becoming big everywhere. Even Hollywood actors are getting in on the fun too!

2.  Wacky Superstitions

First, there was the rally monkey.  This loveable primate supposedly aided the Angels for multiple years. There were t-shirts, songs, poems, and God knows what else created in homage to this lovable guy.

But Cardinals fans wanted to take it to the next level. When a couple of squirrels interrupted their playoffs games (Cards fans claim it was the same squirrel, even though he appeared at home and away games) and the Cardinals believe this has helped them advance as far as they have. Apparently, Cardinals fans would rather give credit to a squirrel than to one of the greatest players of the last 50 years and a historic performance from their bullpen… Either way, the merchandise and buzz surrounding this little squirrel has made the postseason more watchable. And cute. Wait, what?

3.  Joe Buck

Before you freak out, read on. Mr. Buck is famous for a few things. One of which is that his dad is one of the greatest announcers and sports personalities to ever live. Joe is also famous for apparently being famous from his dad being famous. And lastly, Joe Buck is famous for making mistakes on live television… lots of mistakes (like calling Andy Reid fat). Regardless of the number of errors in his announcing, Joe Buck is entertaining to watch. And make fun of.
