Tony Dungy Says He Wouldn’t Have Drafted Texas Tech LB Will Smith Either
TAMPA BAY — After former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy created controversy by saying he wouldn’t have drafted Michael Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player, the NBC Sports analyst created an even bigger stir by saying he also wouldn’t have drafted former Texas Tech LB Will Smith, who was selected with the 23rd pick in the 7th round by the Dallas Cowboys.
In an interview with a writer trying desperately to make the newspaper industry relevant again, Dungy said, “I wouldn’t have drafted Will Smith, not because he shares the name with notable Scientologist and actor Will Smith, but because I don’t agree with any football decisions the Dallas Cowboys make.”
Dungy continued that, if he were a head coach, he wouldn’t want to “deal with” the misleading media attention surrounding Will Smith. “Think about it,” Dungy said. “All of those TMZ paparazzi reporters would be waiting outside of practice everyday waiting for iRobot like idiots.”
Shortly after Dungy’s comments went public, the Internet blew up with think pieces like, “Dungy Is Racist, Hates One of the Men In Black,” and “Dungy Is A Rotten Prince of Bel Air,” and “Tony Dungy Is The REAL Enemy of the State,” and “Dungy Hates EVERYTHING! [You Probably Won’t Read This Article, And Will Form Your Views Based On My Opinion-Based Headline].”
Dungy attempted to stand-up for himself by releasing a statement:
“I don’t discriminate people solely on their name. I said what I said based on a football decision, and more importantly an anti-Dallas Cowboys decision. Would you want a player who the Cowboys thinks is good enough to draft? Plus, he was drafted in the 7th round! Trust me, I don’t hate either Will Smith. I am a fan of Texas Tech and I absolutely loved After Earth.”
Unfortunately for Dungy, his statement caused an even bigger media storm as After Earth was the worst movie ever.
Will Smith could not be reached for comment as he was meditating in a bath of guacamole as part of Scientology’s sabbath ritual.
