The Padres Just Trojan Horsed Their Fans With Bad News Hidden Inside Good News

Talk about a damn trojan horse.

Did you see what the Padres social media team tried to do there? I’ll give you a second to reread the tweet. It might take a second to pick up on it.

Padres signing Mike Clevinger to a two-year extension through 2022?

But wait. What’s the second part of that tweet say? Mike Clevinger will also undergo Tommy John Surgery on Tuesday?

Feels like the word ALSO is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that tweet.

Nice try, Padres social media team. But you’re not getting anything by the Internet. The Internet is undefeated, and we were able to sniff that one out.

Mike Clevinger was traded to the Padres from the Indians at the August 31st trade deadline and was dominant for them down the home stretch until his final start of the season when he left early with an elbow impingement. I honestly couldn’t quite define “impingement” for you, but it sounds like something bad. He missed the entire Wild Card round against the Cardinals, and tried to make a start against the Dodgers in the NLDS, but couldn’t even go 2 innings before he was pulled. And now that’s he’d getting Tommy John surgery, which only further validates my theory of “impingement” not being good.

But hey, at least Clevinger signed a two-year deal, right Padres fans?!

I mean, yeah, one of those years will be spent sidelined while he rehabs his arm, but then you get a full year after that! Or so I assume? Apparently, his new deal replaces his two remaining seasons of arbitration eligibility. And I’m still not 100% how arbitration and all that crap works. But still, having Mike Clevinger out for 12 months isn’t great. Especially with how good the Padres are right now. He could’ve given the Fathers a real shot at contending with the Dodgers for the NL West next year. Tough break, Jayce Tingler.

But anyway, nice job, Padres social media team. I see what you did – or at least tried to do. And while it may not be appreciated by Friar fans, I can respect it. It’s shitty news that you tried to blanket it really awesome news. Better luck next time.

At least the attempt didn’t go over as bad as those Padres fans rap song.
