The History of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Asterisk
Johan Santana was featured on the cover of Saturday’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch after no hitting the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. It was the New York Mets’ first-ever no-hitter, and the first time the Cardinals had been no hit since Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela did it on June 9th, 1990.
However, this extraordinary feat was trivialized by the Post-Dispatch’s headline, which read: “No Hitter*” with a sub-headline reading: “*Santana throws gem with help of missed call.” The missed call refers to a hit down the third base line that hit some chalk and should’ve been ruled fair. Unfortunately, third base umpire Adrian Johnson ruled it foul and the game continued, as did Santana’s no-hitter.
But don’t be surprised, this isn’t the first time the St. Louis Post-Dispatch used an asterisk to denounce an event:
