Tampa Bay’s Fauxbacks Have Started A Trend
The Tampa Bay Rays unveiled new throwback uniforms they will be wearing on June 30th. The throwbacks will honor their 1979 season. Which is it pays tribute to the team’s past… that never happened. You see, the Rays franchise, as many of you know, began in 1998. Thus making said throwbacks more like fauxbacks. Not to mention, they were originally named Devil Rays. So we’re supposed to believe not only were these uniforms the uniforms they would have worn in 1979, but the team was also called the Rays before changing their name to the Devil Rays before changing their name to the Rays again? Although, I guess it does make sense they would add the “Devil” to their name a few years before drafting Josh Hamilton.
Since the MLB is a copycat league (not sure if it is, but just go with it for the sake of this post), other teams have caught onto the Rays’ ambition of creating throwback uniforms from a year before their franchise even existed. Who was next in line? The Cleveland Indians.
