Tampa Bay Rays Considering Hiring Fans To Manage The Team, Just So They’ll Come To Games

Rays FanagerTAMPA BAY — After longtime manager and resident-hipster Joe Maddon left to manage the Chicago Cubs, the Tampa Bay Rays are in the midst of searching for Maddon’s replacement, and a recent press release claims they are considering hiring fans for the position.

Rays GM Matthew Silverman thinks the idea will be extremely beneficial for the franchise. “If we hire a fan or allow fans to take turns managing the team, we’re guaranteed to have at least one fan in attendance every game,” Silverman said. “That would be huge for our annual attendance figures.”

While many think having a fan in the dugout during games will become a distraction, Silverman claims the average fan doesn’t know any Tampa Bay Rays other than Evan Longoria, so they won’t “be starstruck” or “bother most of the players.”

A Rays spokesman says that if the team goes through with the idea, they plan to call the role a “fanager” and the team will provide thick-rimmed glasses to whomever takes the job.

When anyone doubts the process, believing that the product on the field will decline significantly without an actual manager, Silverman says, “We finished behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East last year. Literally anyone could manage this team to a better season than that.”
