So, Uh, Baseball Is Back. I Guess? We’d Be Excited If We Weren’t So Annoyed And Exhausted

Baseball is (maybe) back. Yayyyy.

So apparently baseball is coming back. And with my obsession with baseball, you’d think I’d be stoked.

But instead, this is me.

Because we could’ve been playing baseball for the last few weeks. Or, at very worst, we could’ve started the season on July 1 instead of reporting to spring training, errr, summer training on that day.

At the end of all these “negotiations” – if you want to call them that – the owners ended up just accepting the deal THEY ORIGINALLY AGREED TO ON MARCH 26th. So all this time, they could’ve launched the season with the deal the originally agreed to, but instead, the billionaire owners tried milking more pennies out of this season. I mean, how else will they be able to afford the Christmas bonus for their limo drivers this year? You trying telling Rupert he’s not getting his $15,000 holiday bonus this year.

I’m more frustrated than I am excited right now. And if you feel that way too, it’s ok. I watched the end of that Talladega race last night…

And it was incredible. But all I could think about is how this could be baseball right now. Capturing the eyeballs of every sports-starved human in America right now. Twitter would be blowing up every night with reaction to baseball. For the first time since, well, ever. Because baseball has never been the most popular sport in the Twitter-era. All of America would be fixated on the sport as if we were back in the 1940s again. But instead, greed prevented us of that, and unlike Gordon Gecko claims, greed isn’t good in this case.

Anyway, enough complaining. We wanted baseball. It appears we’re getting baseball, so let’s look at how it’s going to play out this year:

  • 60-game schedule
  • Expected to start around July 24
  • Preseason camps open July 1 (if players approve)
  • Universal DH for 2020 (maybe beyond?)
  • Regional play: West vs. West, Central vs. Central, etc.
  • MLB awaits o.k. from union on health protocols

It will be awkward. It will be weird. But at the end of it all, it will be baseball. And if you hit me in mid March and asked me if I’d take this, I’d shout YES before you even finished the question. So let’s go.
