Made me chuckle. I’m originally from New York and I’ve never said anything else besides have a catch. My dad always said it and that’s what it was and is. Just sounds right. Playing is playing, but having a catch there’s no playing. You’re just standing still and tossing the ball back and forth. Any who my father knew everything about baseball and could talk about it all day. He knew so much about the game and the players it was incredible. I look back and I wish I cared then as much as I do now. Only up until a couple years ago was I made aware of what I was saying. My friend overheard me ask my son if he wanted to have a catch and my friend’s brain melted and is still warped from hearing that and tries to convince me that it’s play catch. So then that made me want to look up on the World Wide Web what the general consensus was. And the majority (and I mean like 98.5 %) say play catch. But, I will never say that and neither will my son. He’s so used to it now he thinks play catch sounds weird. Let’s have a catch just sounds so natural and relaxing.

So the reason for the comment tonight is because I just watched Field of Dreams again and I heard them say it a few times, so my curiosity rose again and I found your article. Kevin Costner does say play catch once in the film, and in an article I read he never understood why the script said have a catch. He just thought it sounded so weird.

Have a catch all day.
