Cards… I Mean, Rams Fans

As we all know, Albert Pujols is no longer a St. Louis Cardinal. We all watched the press conference, and we all sat in front of our laptops reading the angry Facebook updates and tweets of the fans who once loved him.

What I want to talk about is the real reason why those fans were upset.

Sports analysts and sports fans everywhere all seemed to agree that St. Louis fans felt betrayed. They saw Pujols turn his back on the past ten years for a mere 3-4 million dollars more per year.

While there may be some truth to that, I want to bring to light the real reason why the people of St. Louis, MO were upset.

They were upset because now they may actually have to become Rams fans…

Being from St. Louis, I can give you a little insight into Missouri professional sports culture: No one really cares about the Rams.

Sure, when they were winning Super Bowls and Kurt Warner went from throwing frozen hams into plastic bags to throwing 50-yard touchdowns to Isaac Bruce, people were excited. But that was a long time ago.

St. Louis is a baseball town.

Go to any Rams game (or watch one on TV, when they’re not blacked out) and you will see just as many Cardinals hats as Rams jerseys.

People don’t go to Rams games to see them win. They go to the games to make sure that the Rams lose so they can keep cheering for the Cardinals.

St. Louis prides itself on having the “best fans in baseball,” but if you look closely underneath that quote you’ll find, in very small print, that it says “and only baseball… not football… or hockey… but you already knew that.”

When Pujols left, people freaked out a little. The thought of having to cheer for the Rams, or worse, the Blues, was too much to bear.

Fortunately for me and the rest of my hometown, we’re fresh off of another World Series victory, so that should keep us satisfied at least until next October.

I have to respectfully disagree. It’s easy to pick on fans when their team is 2-11 and morale is so low. The truth is that the St. Louis Rams really do have some of the best and most loyal fans in the game. Despite this terrible season, Rams’ fans have in fact been attending the games. The Edward Jones Dome has been averaging well over 56k fans for each home game and have NOT had a single game blacked out this season. St. Louis is a great sports town in general and Rams fans, while understandably ticked off, have wavered little their support. St. Louis is definitely not just a baseball town. It just may seem that way this year because the baseball team just won the world series and the football team is 2-11. Show up at the dome on a Rams home game and you’ll see just how important the Rams are to St. Louis fans.
